A brief description of the procedure that is being followed for inspection of incoming raw materials, in process inspection and finished product inspection is appended below.
The Manufacture of extruded Manual Metal Arc electrodes
The electrode consists of a core wire, centrally placed in a coating and usually silicate bounded. The different stages of the process are briefly described below
Wire Drawing : The electrode quality wire rods (IS: 2879 / 1976) received from M/s TISCO or SAIL are tested for their quality and sent to our respective wire drawers for drawing them into required sizes of wire as per requirements.
Wire Cutting : The wire is then straightened and cut to electrode length, giving bend free wires of required length, which are stacked in pallets with proper identification.
The Coating : The raw materials of the coatings are kept in raw material stores and from these the materials are sent to QC Lab for required chemical analysis as per laid down specification for approval. It is the type and composition of these materials that determines the characteristics of the particular electrode. The passed materials are kept with proper identifications with weighing facilities.
Silicate Storing : They are received in HDPE containers with proper identification and subjected to QC analysis for approval.
Dry Blending : The different QC approved raw materials are weighted and added as per the formulation and mixed for a particular period of time under the direct supervision of QC personnel. Then it will be unloaded, weighed and identified with Batch No. and Date.
Wet Mixing : The respective batch is mixed in the dry state, thoroughly and then a measured quantity of silicate is added to this, depending on the quantity of dry mix taken. The blended batch is then thoroughly mixed, emptied and taken to the slug press, where it is pressed into cake form and ready for extrusion.
Extrusion : The cakes are charged into the cylinder and when it is full, the ram is thrust into the extrusion cylinder. The cut and demurred wire which stored adjacent to the wire feeder, the extrusion piston is then operated and when the flux flow pressure is reached, the wire feeder pushes the wire rods axially to the extrusion head where they receive the coating.
